Piracy reached its zenith in the early 18th Century, when hordes of ships trawled the Caribbean and Atlantic seas for booty. Among them were cross-dressing buccaneers Ann Bonny and Mary Read, as well as the pirate queen of the South China Seas Madam Jung E Sow, who ruled a fleet of over 600 junks and thousands of men.
