The Phil Ramone Story: Part Four

Another chance to hear the story of the late record producer, told by Alison Moyet. How Ramone's technical innovations influenced the way Hollywood recorded movie music.

Alison Moyet tells the story of the record producer Phil Ramone who died earlier this year.
He was known as The Pope of Pop. Bette Midler called him a "giant in the recording world". To Billy Joel, Phil Ramone was "the King. If I hadn't met Phil, I would have had a completely different life".
With specially recorded contributions from Hugh Jackman, Barbra Streisand, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, this programme considers how working on the soundtrack on Midnight Cowboy was a pivotal moment in Ramone's career, and how his technical innovations influenced the way Hollywood recorded movie music and sound.
Ramone also reflects on the recording of the original Broadway cast recordings of Chicago, Passion, Promises Promises and The Boy From Oz.
"We ply our craft deep into the night, behind locked doors. And with few exceptions, the fruit of our labour is seldom launched with the glitzy fanfare of a Hollywood premiere", Phil Ramone.
Written and produced by Malcolm Prince. First broadcast in 2005.
