Mike Walker - Up and Down in Silvertown
With her east London tower block due to come down, Flo’s departure from Dunlop Point takes her back in time. Stars Anna Wing.
Recorded on location in the Dunlop Point tower block in Silvertown, East London, Mike Walker's play revolves around an elderly woman being forced to move out to allow its demolition. With the lift out-of-order, she slowly descends nineteen flights of stairs, reminiscing about the history of the London Docks with her great-granddaughter, Amba.
Dunlop Point was a 23 storey residential block in the Silvertown district of Newham, East London. It was opened in 1967 and was awarded a Civic Trust Design Award in 1968. The building deteriorated rapidly and in 1994, residents were balloted and voted to have it demolished. In August 1998, the year that this play is set, it and the neighbouring Cranbrook Point, were demolished.
Stars Anna Wing.
Directed by Jeremy Mortimer.
First heard on Radio 4 in 1998.
