Oscar-winning comedy drama. Expelled from the Czech State Orchestra, and now scraping a living playing cello at funerals, confirmed bachelor Louka agrees to marry a young Russian woman for cash, enabling her to remain in the country. But when she runs off to West Germany, leaving her son with his grandmother who promptly dies, Louka finds himself responsible for the boy, despite the fact that neither can speak the other's language.
