Radio 3 at Womad 2017

Get ready for a wild weekend of sounds and beats from around the world as Radio 3 returns to Womad.

World on 3 presenters Lopa Kothari, Kathryn Tickell and Andrew McGregor introduce live performances by artists from around the globe – from electro fusion veterans to legendary choir and from virtuoso kanun queen to Baul boss Parvathy Baul.

Meanwhile, musician and presenter to co-present her weekly Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 6 Music show as a special live simulcast with Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3.

Kicking off more than 11 hours of live broadcasting across the WOMAD weekend, Emir Kusturica and the No-Smoking Orchestra light up WOMAD live from the Open Air stage. The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians make their WOMAD debut and Spanish folk band Viguela are live from the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3 Charlie Gillett Stage, plus recorded highlights from Malian diva Oumou Sangare and Estonian turbo-folk band Trad Attack.

: ska, fado, electro-Afro-Celtic fusion and classic Cuban rhythms

Grab your dancing shoes for classic Jamaican ska from Toots and The Maytals on the Open Air stage, Portuguese fado from Raquel Tavares, and collaborative projects from Lamomali, featuring kora master Toumani Diabate and the Afro Celt Sound System. Plus interviews and exclusive backstage sessions from Syrian kanun player Maya Youssef and Cuban singer Daymé Arocena.

Cerys Matthews joins Lopa Kothari live from the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3 Charlie Gillett Stage, for interviews and live performances from onstage artists including Los Angeles Latin band Las Cafeteras, Msafiri Zawose from Tanzania, and Delhi-based outfit The Ska Vengers.

: Ghanaian kologo, South African a cappella, Chilean cumbia and Angolan semba

WOMAD 2017 comes to a close with traditional Ghanaian kologo music for the 21st century from King Ayisoba, South Africa's iconic a cappella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Chilean cumbia from Chico Trujillo and the powerful voice and semba rhythms of Angola's Bonga.
