Manish Bhasin and guests preview the weekend's football fixtures on the final Saturday before the busy Christmas period.

Sir Alex Ferguson said earlier in the season that Manchester United's hopes of retaining their Barclays Premier League title would depend on how they coped with the festive schedule, which sees them jetting off to Japan to take part in the Fifa Club World Cup. United's rivals will be hoping to take advantage of their absence.

Μύ

Arsenal and Liverpool meet at the Emirates tomorrow afternoon in a fixture that could have a massive bearing on the title race. Aston Villa, who are hoping to break the top four's monopoly this season, will be looking to keep up their challenge with victory at West Ham today.

Μύ

Birmingham and Reading have both responded well to being relegated from the Premier League last season and their Coca-Cola Championship clash at St Andrews today could have a significant impact on their chances of an immediate return to the top flight.

Μύ

In the Clydesdale Bank SPL, Rangers will be looking to get three points against Hibernian, as they gear up for the Old Firm clash with Celtic next weekend.

Aston Villa have looked the team most likely to threaten the big four's monopoly this season and, today, Martin O'Neill's side were at West Ham, where seven of their last eight league visits have resulted in a draw.

Μύ

Middlesbrough were looking for their fourth consecutive victory over Fulham, while Blackburn were aiming to make it five victories on the trot against Stoke. Sunderland travelled down the north-east coast to tackle Hull, while Tony Adams's Portsmouth were at Bolton, where they won last season thanks to a controversial late goal from Lassana Diarra.

Adrian Chiles brings viewers highlights from today's three Premier League games

Premier League games

Adrian Chiles introduces highlights from today's three Premier League games, the pick of which must be Arsenal versus Liverpool. The last time these two teams met was in last season's Champions League quarter-final, which Liverpool won 5-3 on aggregate after a scintillating 4-2 victory in the second leg at Anfield. It was the third time in a week that the two teams had met; the Gunners didn't win any of those three games but have won four of their last five home league meetings with Liverpool.

Μύ

Tottenham visited Newcastle, with both sides having spent much of the early part of the season in the lower reaches of the Premier League. Tottenham's last three league visits to St James's Park have all ended in 3-1 defeats, but the arrival of Harry Redknapp has given Spurs fans renewed hope.

Μύ

The third encounter was between West Brom and Manchester City at the Hawthorns. Baggies fans have happy memories of City's recent visits – none more so than in January 2005 when bottom-of-the-table Albion's 2-0 victory was their first win in 16 games and sparked a revival which saw them escape relegation on the final day of the season.

It's the sixth of the 13 World Cup qualifiers, with points crucial for riders hoping to make it to the final in Las Vegas next April. Last year, Ireland's Jessica Kurten won the event at Olympia on her mare, Castle Forbes Libertina, just pipping British rider Nick Skelton on Arko III in a thrilling contest.

Gary Lineker introduces highlights from today's busy programme of Premier League fixtures. Boxing Day games are one of English football's most famous traditions and it's also one of the few occasions in the season when all the teams in the top flight play on the same day.

Μύ

Stoke were thumped 5-0 when they visited Old Trafford last month, so they will have been hoping that Manchester United were suffering jetlag from their recent trip to Japan when the teams met at the Britannia Stadium today.

Μύ

Aston Villa would have fancied their chances against Arsenal after breaking their losing streak against the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium back in November.

Μύ

Fulham inflicted the first defeat of Harry Redknapp's Tottenham reign last month and will have been hoping to do the double over Spurs by winning at White Hart Lane today. High-flying Chelsea hosted struggling West Brom, while Bolton travelled to Anfield to meet Liverpool.

Μύ

In the day's other games, Portsmouth faced West Ham at Fratton Park, Blackburn went to Sunderland, and Newcastle were at Wigan, who are managed by boyhood Magpies fan Steve Bruce.

Gary Lineker presents the goals and highlights from today's Premier League games. With the teams right in the heart of the busy festive period, this afternoon's matches followed just 48 hours after the Boxing Day fixtures. The bottom half of the league has been very tight this year but, with so many points at stake over Christmas, the relegation picture could become a lot clearer by the time 2009 arrives.

Μύ

Today's games included Arsenal versus Portsmouth, in what was Gunners legend Tony Adams's first trip back to his old club as a Premier League manager. Liverpool were looking to boost their title challenge against Newcastle, a team they beat 3-0 both home and away last season. And there was a West London derby at Craven Cottage, where Fulham played host to Chelsea.

Μύ

Mark Hughes took his Manchester City team back to Ewood Park, where he spent four seasons at Blackburn Rovers before moving to City in the summer. Sunderland travelled to Everton, where they were thrashed 7-1 last season. Bolton enjoyed a 4-1 win at home to Wigan last December, a result that proved their best of the season, but they would have settled for any sort of victory today. In today's other games, West Brom hosted Tottenham and Stoke travelled to West Ham.
