Inspector George Gently: Neil Pearson plays Alan Shepherd in Goodbye China

Who do you play and what can you tell us about him?

I play a Chief of Police with an enviable record of crime prevention and an unenviable secret.

Do you enjoy period dramas?

I enjoy good dramas, whatever the period. My first period drama was also with Martin Shaw, on Rhodes.

Have you worked with any of the cast?

I worked with Martin Shaw for the first time on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Rhodes: a fine actor, company leader and friend. We filmed together in South Africa for six months in 1995, and both grew bushy moustaches to save ourselves time each day in the make-up chair. On set and in costume, we both effortlessly achieved that trademark 1890s look. Off set and in our own clothes, people assumed we were filming Freddie Mercury: The Wilderness Years!

Have you filmed in the North East before?

I've filmed in Newcastle before, but never Durham. I wish I'd had more time to explore.

What do you think of the 1966 period costumes and hair?

It's a miracle anyone ever got laid.

Do you remember the Sixties?

I remember being given a glass of sherry to celebrate the moon landing in 1969. I was nine. Haven't touched it since.
