After tapping, popping, pirouetting and performing with originality, personality and panache, the final 20 are finally ready to prove to the public that they've got what it takes in So You Think You Can Dance on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One.

The culmination of national auditions, call backs and choreography camp is now complete. Amateurs and professionals from all around the UK, from disciplines including jazz, ballet, hip-hop and contemporary were put to the test – challenged with learning new techniques and routines by some of the best choreographers in the business. Now the Top 20 has been selected for the live Saturday night studio shows, which begin on 16 April with a special showcase performance show.

Cat Deeley hosts the search for the nation's favourite dancer, and Nigel Lythgoe returns as head judge along with renowned choreographer Arlene Phillips, dancer/choreographer Sisco Gomez and pop sensation Louise Redknapp. On top of the coveted title comes a once-in-a-lifetime invitation to dance in Hollywood on the US version of the show, as well as prize money of Β£50,000.

Talented competitors from all over the UK came to parade their unique take on hip-hop, Latin, contemporary, commercial, jazz and any number of freestyle moves, in a bid to win over the judges. The lucky Top 20 (10 guys and 10 girls), who made it through both the auditions and Choreography Camp, are now getting the opportunity to strut their stuff in front of the nation – live – every Saturday night.

Each week they'll be taught to perform a new routine by world-renowned choreographers, struggling as they step out of their comfort zones, with, for example, ballet dancers attempting hip-hop routines, and tap dancers tackling contemporary dance.

And it's not just the judges they have to impress. Viewers have the ultimate power to vote for their favourite dancer, and for one guy and one girl who don't hit the mark, the journey ends each week. During the results show, the dancers get the opportunity to showcase their skills in a visual extravaganza as they take part in a weekly group performance.

How it works

Only 10 girls and 10 boys made it through the auditions to be selected for the live shows. Of these 20, one will be crowned the winner of So You Think You Can Dance and win the opportunity to dance in Hollywood plus Β£50,000.

Each week the live shows will be followed by a separate live results show (except for the showcase of the dancers live on Saturday 16 April) when there will not be a public vote.

Voting

From the 23 April one guy and one girl will be eliminated.

Out of the two lowest scoring couples chosen by the public, the judges will select one boy and one girl to be eliminated after all four dance for their lives in a 30-second solo.

Towards the end of the run, viewers will vote for their favourite individual dancers and the judges will lose their power to make the final decision, only giving critiques.

From the fifth live show, couples will be changed. The dancers will all dance solo, in group routines and as couples, in a variety of different styles through the series.
