F2 doctor, 25, Hong Kong

Designated department – Paediatrics

Andy is from Hong Kong and was inspired to become a doctor by Benedictine monks who taught him at boarding school in York. Now into the second year of his foundation course, Andy, 25, is working hard towards his dream of becoming a surgeon. He thought taking part in the series would show just what becoming a doctor means.

Dr Kong will be spending his next rotation in paediatrics, where one of the biggest challenges will be dealing with anxious parents. Working with children brings its own unique challenges and Andy will need to get his bedside manner right to win their confidence and put them at ease.

Andy loves to cook, especially seafood, practices Chinese swordsmanship and can be found at the shooting range for target practice or at home lost in his games console.

Why did you want to get into medicine?

I enjoy the patient contact – I like the fact that our patients are from all different backgrounds. I like the fact that I meet so many different people.

What are the best and worst things about being a junior doctor?

The best thing is there is somebody to run to when I need help. The worst thing about being a junior doctor is the tremendous workload. The best way to keep that work/life balance is organisation and getting used to having little sleep!

What would you either like to see a cure for or be credited for a cure with in your career?

I just want to be very good at what I do.

Who would you turn to for a diagnosis?

House! If I was sick I would go to House for a diagnosis. I aspire to be like House – he is a genius.
