Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Learning – Hands On History
Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Learning is inviting people to get hands-on with Norman history throughout the UK at bbc.co.uk/history.
Working in partnership with a range of heritage and history organisations, Hands On History is offering a variety of family-friendly events and activities, including a series of guided Norman walks throughout the UK.
Nina Bell, Project Executive, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Learning, says: "Walking in the footsteps of the Normans is a great way to get out and about this summer and Hands On History makes it easy to engage with and learn about the Normans wherever you live, from Pembroke to Jersey to Cumbria. There are lots of downloadable resources on our website and I hope everyone, young and old, enjoys discovering the fascinating story of the Normans over the summer holidays."
Those who are unable to attend the guided walk can download a map of the route from bbc.co.uk/history and discover the majesty of their Norman heritage under their own steam. Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ local radio is also supporting the season with interviews and features.
The site also provides a wealth of resources and ideas for families looking for ways to enjoy the summer holidays: there are four family activities ranging from instructions on how to build a time capsule to a medieval recipe for gingerbread; there are two spotters' guides to print off and take on a day out to a church or castle; and a fun, adventurous game to get people running around in the summer sun – or inside if it's raining.
Groups interested in running their own Hands On History activities can order a pack with creative workshop ideas complete with instructions, posters, stickers and a Norman timeline for display. A schools' pack of lesson plans and class project plans will go live on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Schools website for free download to use from September 2011.
