Bringing natural history to children - Steve Backshall hunts his Deadly 60: presspack - episode guide

Steve Backshall with a hippo

Programme 1

The series kicks off in South Africa where Steve has a couple of extraordinary hippo encounters. He takes a dip in the river with Jessica, thought to be the world's only tame hippo.

Further downriver Steve faces a very different scenario when he meets a wild hippo who takes an instant dislike to him.

Steve also weighs up the deadly attributes of three snakes – the black mamba, rock python and rhinkal – to see which should make his list, and he embarks on a scorpion hunt in the bush.

Programme 2

When a Nile crocodile attacks a local six-year-old girl in her own swimming pool Steve makes it his mission to investigate whether these ancient reptiles truly deserve their deadly reputation.

In true Steve style there is a lot of climbing and a certain amount of falling involved as he pits himself against the soaring fish eagle in a power dive competition to catch a fish. Will Steve be able to mimic the eagle's masterful skills?

Finally he's hot on the trail of Africa's most elusive large predator, the hunting dog. Searching the bush by foot, by jeep and by air for this rare creature gives him the opportunity to see just how good the hunting dogs are.

Information about future episodes will be published in Network TV Programme Information.
