Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Statements of Programme Policy 2008/2009

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Statements of Programme Policy (SoPPs) are published online today.

Μύ

The statements detail, service-by-service, how the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ will deliver its public service remit across its portfolio over the year ahead.

Μύ

The priorities outlined for 2008/2009 reflect what audiences have said they want from the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ.

Μύ

In October 2007 the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Trust approved the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Delivering Creative Future strategy setting out a vision and roadmap for the next five years.

Μύ

It is a strategy focused on delivering the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's six public purposes by providing value to all audiences, investing simultaneously in linear and non-linear services, serving the whole of the UK, and helping the UK prepare for a digital future.

Μύ

At the heart of this strategy is a focus on distinctive and innovative content.

Μύ

Building on this strategy, the Statements of Programme Policy (SoPPs) set out editorial priorities for each of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's services for the coming year.

Μύ

The SoPPs also include the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's commitments and conditions as set out in the service licences and by Ofcom.

Μύ

Commitments in 2008/2009 include:

Μύ

Continuing commitment to international, national and local journalism of the highest quality and integrity, with plans to build on the success of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One 8pm bulletin in attracting audiences who do not watch the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's other bulletins. In radio, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 1 will take Newsbeat on the road, hearing directly from young audiences and reflecting their concerns on air

Μύ

A range of inspiring and thoughtful knowledge-building content. The 150th anniversary of Darwin's On The Origin Of Species will be marked, while Simon Schama will examine American history in the run-up to the US election. Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔΜύRadioΜύ4's ambitious natural history project World On The Move is covering animal migration on five continents

Μύ

Drama will build on our strength in high-quality returning series with innovative new programmes such as Bonekickers (about a team of archaeologists), complemented by distinctive series such as The Diary Of Anne Frank and a new adaptation of Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens. Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two will focus on single plays and authored pieces including BurnΜύUp, a two-part thriller from Simon Beaufoy, and a thought-provoking piece from Frank Cottrell Boyce, God on Trial

Μύ

Highlights in music programming will include a landmark collection of newly commissioned recordings to celebrate the work of British songwriters on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 2, and the marking on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3 of the anniversaries associated with Vaughan Williams in 2008 and Purcell, Handel, Haydn and Mendelssohn from the beginning of 2009

Μύ

2008 will be a major year of sport, with Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One leading the multi-platform coverage of Euro 2008 and the Beijing Olympics. We also look forward to live Formula One motor racing returning to Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Television after an absence of 14 years.

Μύ

Building on the success of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ iPlayer, we want to develop bbc.co.uk to include a broad range of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's broadcast content, as well as new and interactive forms of media that enable audiences to interact with and contribute to the website. This will be subject to further scrutiny by the Trust and the Trust's approval of new controls which are being developed in response to the review of bbc.co.uk, published last week.

Notes to Editors

Μύ

Under the Communications Act 2003, each public service broadcaster must produce an annual statement identifying its commitments for delivering its public service remit in the year ahead. This is the seventh set of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ statements.

Μύ

The terms under which the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ is required to produce statements for its public services are covered in the Revised Agreement with the Secretary of State approved by Parliament in December 2003.

Μύ

It is the sole responsibility of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Trust to monitor the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's performance against the statements and report their conclusions.

Μύ

The regulatory programming quotas placed on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ, which are monitored by Ofcom, are in addition to SoPPs commitments. These are measured by Ofcom on a calendar year basis and compliance reported by the external regulator.

Μύ

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Trust will monitor the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's performance against these statements and will publish their findings in the Annual Report and Accounts 2008/2009.

Μύ

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's accounting year runs from 1 April to 31 March.
