Madonna to headline Radio 1's Big Weekend 2008


Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 1 announced today that the station will kick off the 2008 festival season with Madonna headlining Radio 1's Big Weekend.

The event takes place at Mote Park in Maidstone, Kent, on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May.

Chris Moyles announced the big news and the full main stage line-up on his show this morning. The line-ups for the rest of the stages will be announced throughout the day on Radio 1.

Across the weekend and over four stages, more than 30,000 lucky music fans will enjoy a stellar line-up of over 50 UK and international artists alongside world-class DJs.

A truly multi-platform event, Radio 1's Big Weekend will be broadcast on Radio 1 and be available to watch on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔΜύThree, with five hours of coverage from the event, including a live broadcast of Madonna's performance on Saturday night.

There will also be a Madonna special on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ One and coverage on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Two, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ HD, Red button and online at bbc.co.uk/radio1, bringing the audience unprecedented levels of content.

More than 30,000 tickets will be available across the weekend. Listeners will be able to register for tickets for a week from Monday 21 April, 8.00am, until Monday 28 April, 10.00am, at bbc.co.uk/radio1.

More than 470,000 people applied for tickets last year and this year demand is expected to be even bigger. Each lucky applicant will receive a pair of tickets for either Saturday or Sunday.

Once again, Radio 1 will ensure that local residents are given preference for tickets. Tickets will be allocated randomly, but weighted in favour of those living in Maidstone, Kent and the surrounding areas, with a smaller amount distributed nationally.

Listeners registering across the UK will also have the chance to win tickets via Radio 1 on-air competitions in the week before the event.

Throughout the weekend, Radio 1 DJs Chris Moyles, Jo Whiley, Vernon Kay, Scott Mills, Fearne & Reggie, Edith Bowman, Zane Lowe, Pete Tong, Judge Jules, Tim Westwood, Annie Mac, Dave Pearce, Greg James, Dick & Dom, Nick Grimshaw and Kelly Osbourne will be introducing the bands on stage, interacting with listeners online and on-site, plus broadcasting live from the event.

  • Radio 1's Big Weekend – The Official Aftershow will take place at Studio 5, Maidstone TV Studios on Saturday 10 May, with exclusive DJ sets from Pete Tong, Laurent Garnier, Simian Mobile Disco (DJ set), Annie Mac, Nic Fanciulli, Sam Ball & very special guest Danny Rampling, promoted by Club Class.   • Ticket registration for Radio 1's Big Weekend will open for a week from 8.00am on Monday 21 April and will close at 10.00am on Monday 28 April.

  • There are over 30,000 tickets available to listeners for the event.

  • Tickets are given out in pairs.

  • Entrants can only enter once, multiple entries will be discounted.

  • Radio 1 will email entrants from Wednesday 30 April to Friday 2 May to advise if they have been successful or not. Tickets will then be sent in the post.

  • Tickets are secure and traceable – every ticket is securely printed with a unique barcode and the name and address of the person who received it. If an entrant has been selected but does not receive tickets Radio 1 will cancel the original ones and advise on how to get replacements. Tickets will be scanned on the gate and any cancelled tickets will be rejected.

  • Radio 1 advises to not risk buying tickets from other people – to apply for tickets people will be asked to accept a condition that says they will not resell the tickets. Wherever possible any tickets re-sold will be will invalidated. Valid tickets for Radio 1's Big Weekend are free and are only available from Radio 1 or its partners.

  • Radio 1's Big Weekend does not have an age limit, however those under 16 will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult aged 18 or over. Children under two years old do not need a ticket, but those that are two and over will need one.

  • Last years Radio 1's Big Weekend in Preston brought listeners Scissor Sisters, Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight, Kasabian, Mika, Natasha Bedingfield, Bloc Party, Stereophonics, Rihanna, Dizzee Rascal and more.

  • The event is accessible – the two main stages have viewing platforms for disabled people. Disabled parking is available for anyone with a Blue Badge.

  • Radio 1 will also be hosting The Fringe Festival to celebrate the local Kent music scene. Four events will take place in Maidstone in the week preceding Radio 1's Big Weekend. Bands have been applying online at bbc.co.uk/radio1/bigweekend. A panel including Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Kent Introducing presenters James Bursey and Tom Kirkby, Radio 1's Huw Stephens, the Radio 1 live events team and producers will be responsible for selecting the bands. Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Kent Introducing will host a night during the Fringe featuring bands selected by the show. From this line-up, Huw Stephens will choose his two favourite bands who will go on to play the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Introducing stage at Radio 1's Big Weekend.

  • Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Introducing is supporting unsigned, undiscovered and under the radar music, artists and DJs.

  • Radio 1, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Switch and Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Learning have partnered up to host the Headroom Tent at Radio 1's Big Weekend – a special place for festival goers to unwind their minds, with six different interactive zones, festival goers can chill out in the Dreamfields, fire up their lives with inspiration for living their dreams or make some of their own music with the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Roar-chestra. The tent will be aimed at providing festival goers learning experiences and activities around subjects like self-esteem and confidence without feeling like they're being preached at. Radio 1 and Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Switch presenters Kelly Osbourne and Nick Grimshaw will be hosting Q&A sessions with Radio 1 DJs and artists, taking questions on careers, confidence and life in general.

  • Headroom is a two-year Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Learning campaign providing practical advice and simple ideas about how individuals can look after their mental wellbeing. The Headroom tent will tour festivals across the UK over the summer and is created by Elemental Worldwide. The Headroom website bbc.co.uk/headroom goes live on 6 May.
