Learning events at the heart of the Proms season
Opening up the world of classical music to young people and new audiences has long been at the heart of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms season, and this year is no exception, as a wide range of events invite members of the public to experience the joy of making music, try their hand at composing and even have the opportunity to play alongside professional musicians.

This year's focus for the Proms Learning team will be on theme of folk music, which reflects the Proms' anniversary celebration of Vaughan Williams, himself an avid collector of folk songs. Today, folk music is a tradition gaining ground among people of all ages.

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms Inspire Young Composers' competition

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Proms Inspire Young Composers' Competition is supported by The Guardian. Now in its 10th year, it has helped many thousands of creative young people gain skills and confidence in expressing themselves through music, and set many others on the road to recognition.

Anyone between the ages of 12 and 18 can enter the competition. Entries should last for no more than five minutes, and budding composers can choose whichever style or form of music they want, from classical to jazz and pop. It's also completely up to the composer whether they use vocal, instrumental or both, and in any combination.

Above all, this year's judges – Andrew Kurowski, Editor, New Music, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3; composers Fraser Trainer, Tansy Davies and Stuart MacRae; and Peter Kingston of Education Guardian – will be looking for imagination in the compositions.

Last year's competition offered the five winners a professional commission for a chamber work. Each of them was given a slightly different brief and an unusual instrumental line-up to tackle. Earlier this year the five composers came together to hear their finished pieces recorded by professional Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ musicians.

The pieces will be heard again in a Proms Plus event on 26 July, as well as being broadcast on Radio 3. At the Inspire Day on 6 August, you can hear the pieces of the 2008 winners before they receive their commission for next year.

So if you are a keen composer, aged between 12 to 18, you have until 23 May to get your entry in for next year's Proms Inspire Young Composers' competition.

On Folk Day The London Sinfonietta, MuzsikΓ΅s and Folkestra are joined by young musicians playing Side-By-Side in the world premiere of a brand-new arrangement by Kathryn Tickell for the finale of this free concert.
