Radio 3 develops ESOL programme for World Music

As part of the wider events around this year's Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3 Awards For World Music, Radio 3 has delivered a programme of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to better engage BAME (Black Asian Minority Ethnic Groups) communities with the British World music scene and industry.

The ESOL programme will consist of materials designed to inform, enthuse and provoke thought about World Music and the 2007 Awards in particular.

The materials will be designed at NQF levels Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2 and will be fully mapped to the ESOL core curriculum; there is also a set of teacher's notes to accompany the pack, as well as visual and audio material.

The materials will provide imaginative, fun activities using texts, authentic articles, and world music and radio audio. Their focus is the development of real-life communicative skills and powers of self-expression, using and honouring the learners' own lives as a resource.

The programme looks at issues of identity and culture, thus strengthening the voices of the cultures that created the music.

There is now an estimated minority ethnic population of more than four million, 7.1% of the population. Modern Britain is a home to communities from every corner of the globe and their cultures, music and skills have been an important force in Britain's development socially, culturally and economically.

In spite of this, a hallmark of the British world music audience has always been the disparity between the ethnic composition of its audience and that of wider British society. It is far from unusual for the musicians on stage to significantly outnumber their compatriots or ex-compatriots in the audience.

This education programme is part of a wider effort on the part of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ to take world music to a broader, younger audience.

In addition to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 3 Awards For World Music Poll Winners Concert on the evening of Sunday 27 May, there will be free daytime events in the foyer of the Barbican on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 of May.

These will feature the cream of world music broadcasters and artists with free concerts, live radio broadcasts and workshops.

There will also be ticketed film screenings from the International Film Forum IMZ on Sunday 27 May.

- 3-4pm: LIVE Radio 3's World Routes (featuring Maurice el MΓ©dioni and Ghada Shbeir) presented by Lucy Duran from the Freestage.
- 5-7pm: LIVE WDR radio show 5 Planeten by German station Funkhaus Europa presented by Francis Gay from the Freestage.
- The first 20 students to arrive and register their details will each receive a Β£20 discount on a poll winners concert ticket. Student card required on the day.

- 3-6pm World Music labs to include: Charlie Gillett in conversation with this year's winners. Gilles Peterson and Charlie Gillett in discussion reflecting on 20 years of world music and their different DJ styles while playing their favourite records.
- Ticketed film screenings from the International Film Forum IMZ taking place throughout the day.

The Poll Winners' concert will be held at the Barbican, London on Sunday 27 May and broadcast live on Radio 3.
