Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ seeking young Kenyan entrepreneurs

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Head of Swahili, Solomon Mugera is seeking young business minded Kenyans to take part in the broadcaster's competition Prosper With The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ.

Μύ

The competition, launched in early April, has already attracted hundreds of Kiswahili speakers across Africa but nothing so far from Kenya.

Μύ

"I am convinced many young Kenyans have interesting ideas for money-making projects which will launch their business careers and serve their local communities," says Mugera. "We just need to raise awareness of the competition and the opportunities it will bring."

Μύ

Prosper With The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ is open to young Swahili-speakers aged 16 to 24. They are invited to submit their proposals on how they can start a successful business that has a positive impact on their community, using US $2,000.

Μύ

The winner of the competition, which closes for entries on Wednesday 2 May, will address the Commonwealth Business Symposium during the Commonwealth Heads of State Summit in Uganda in November, and win US $2,000 and a laptop computer.

Μύ

The second and third runners-up will be awarded US $600 and US $400 respectively, plus a mobile phone.

Μύ

The results will be announced at the Kilimanjaro Hotel Kempinski in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and broadcast live on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Swahili radio and online, via bbcswahili.com, at 6.30pm EAT on Wednesday 27 June.

Μύ

Zablon Karingi Muthaka, a Kenyan entrepreneur, will be one of the judges of the competition.

Μύ

Zablon is 27-years-old and lives in Kangemi on the outskirts of Nairobi. He started his own company, Beta Bins Waste Management and Environmental Conservation, with US $1,500 and it now has an annual turnover of US $6,152.

Μύ

Zablon said: "I understand what a hard-working driven, passionate person can do with a bit of help. I was able to realise my dream and give something to the community, now someone else has that chance."

Μύ

Multi-award winning singer Lady JD, who is performing live at the final, adds: "Everybody needs a start and this is a great opportunity for someone to begin a successful career. I'm looking forward to seeing some brilliant entries."
