Barrister – Head of chambers

Ìý

Firmly established as the leading prosecutor on the Northern Circuit, Laurence is a QC at the top of his profession and should shortly be heading into the judiciary.

Ìý

A profoundly ambitious man, Laurence renounced his working class roots in order to ease his passage to the top but beneath the polished and arrogant exterior lies deep-set insecurities about his humble beginnings and a nagging fear of failure.

Ìý

Laurence is now at a crossroads in his life: his children are no longer dependent, his marriage is stagnating, his career has reached a plateau and his former pupil is rapidly becoming a threat to his reputation.

Barrister

Ìý

Brought up in a privileged legal family, there was never any question of Honor not following in their footsteps and becoming a barrister.

Ìý

A determined career woman, she had no qualms about using her wealth, status and feminine wiles to propel her slightly older husband forward at the same time as pursuing her own ambitions.

Ìý

Her dream is to build an unassailable legal dynasty: she and Laurence as High Court Judges, Laura as a powerful barrister.

Ìý

But her ambition is hampered by her jealously of her attractive and increasingly confident daughter, and her growing frustration with Laurence's repeated defeat at the hands of Jack.

Barrister

Ìý

With a combination of her mother's looks and her father's tenacity, Laura is destined for great things, but has yet to find her feet in the legal world.

Ìý

Having suffered an early setback when the chambers she joined following her pupillage collapsed, she decided to accept her parents' offer to join the family chambers, on the understanding that it was a temporary measure to gain experience.

Ìý

Laura loves her parents, particularly Laurence whom she dotes on, but at the back of her mind she's aware of the growing need to establish her independence.

Ìý

As her professional confidence grows so will her courage to speak out for what she believes is right. Drawn to Jack's passion and integrity but wary of his emotional restraint, Laura would dearly love to get to know the real Jack Roper.

Solicitor

Ìý

Sally is an infectiously bubbly solicitor with a joie-de-vivre and a natural warmth. Nothing fazes Sally; she's seen all forms of low-life criminals and believes that they're all human beings at heart.

Ìý

She can be bossy at times, but not controlling, and most of all, she cares about her clients. A loving wife and mother of two, Sally's schoolteacher husband is her best friend and soul mate, but has long stopped meeting her sexual needs.

Ìý

Naturally flirtatious, Sally craves attention from men and has no qualms about seeking occasional excitement outside her marriage.

Head of the CPS

Ìý

A good-looking, confident man, Chris would have made a clever police officer, but doesn't quite have the mental agility required to practice law.

Ìý

He settled for a career at the CPS after discovering he suffered severe stage-fright standing up in court. As Annie's career blossomed and she showed no signs of wanting the family life he craved, his inner frustrations grew.

Ìý

Eighteen months ago, following a blazing row with Annie, Chris stormed out of the house, drove off in anger, lost control of the car and broke his spine. Now paralysed beneath the waist he has hurled everything into getting his working life back.

Ìý

His sheer determination has been awe-inspiring but he cannot bring himself to accept his own limitations. As he retreats into a harder and harder shell, he pushes Annie further away.

Solicitor

Ìý

Ash is a player. Asian, streetwise and flash, he has risen to junior partner in a prominent firm of solicitors, largely by bringing in cases from the Asian community.

Ìý

Having spent most of his career associating with criminals, Ash has unwittingly adopted some of their mannerisms but although he's prepared to bend the rules, he would stop short of anything wholly unethical.

Ìý

Ash earns more than most of our barristers and he drives the Mercedes to prove it. He instinctively mistrusts the police and is attracted to the anti-establishment stance of Jack's chambers. He works hard and plays hard and is attracted to women who are impressed by his status.

Ìý

Circuit Judge – Resider of the Circuit

Ìý

A highly regarded and well-liked Afro-Caribbean judge, Winyard spent most of his career before joining the Bench defending and is therefore sympathetic to Jack and his ilk, but he also knows all the tricks.

Ìý

Deeply respectable and a regular churchgoer, Winyard is more likely to take a moral line when hearing cases but at the end of the day, he'll always uphold the system.

Ìý

With a twinkle in his eye and a wry sense of humour, Winyard enjoys playing the game with the barristers and will often have running jokes going in court. Winyard has reached the pinnacle of his career and is thoroughly enjoying his status.

Ìý

Circuit Judge

Ìý

A well-respected circuit judge, Newland prides herself on her unmitigated impartiality; she always looks for the argument not the emotion in a case.

Ìý

Straight down the line and extremely perceptive, nothing gets past Newland. Savvy and ambitious, she is fully aware of the advantages of being a woman in a man's world and has every intention of continuing up the career ladder as far as she can.
