Holocaust Memorial Day

The UK Holocaust Memorial Day is a government initiative and was first held on 27 January 2001.

It commemorates all the communities which suffered as a result of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution.

Whilst its central focus remains the Holocaust, the day also provides an opportunity for reflection on more recent atrocities that raise similar issues, and has a different theme each year.

The fifth Holocaust Memorial Day will be on 27 January 2005, marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the former Nazi concentration and extermination camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Since 2001, Holocaust Memorial Day has been hosted by a different part of the UK - this year it is the turn of London.

Hundreds of activities and events will take place across the whole country exploring the theme Survivors, Liberation and Rebuilding Lives.
