FOUR tackles the big questions about heritage in this observational
series.
How
should Britain's history be conserved? How can the right balance
be found between preservation of national treasures and public access
to them? What does value for money mean in a world where restorations
can cost millions of pounds?
As
the Trust's membership creeps ever closer to an incredible 3.2 million
Britons, this series looks at the scope of work that the Trust does,
how it get its hands on some of the most important buildings and
sites in the land and what it does when it gets them.
Established
in 1895, the National Trust is the leading guardian of Britain's
historic houses, gardens, countryside and over six hundred miles
of coastline.
Filmed
over two years at a time when the Trust is trying to modernize,
the series focuses on five Trust hot spots (Studland Beach, Stonehenge,
Lennon's boyhood home, Waddesdon Manor and Tyntesfield Manor) and
reveals that life for the Trust is definitely not all cream teas
and crumbling houses.

It protects over 606 miles of coastline and 52,000 hectares of coastal
land in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, which is 18% of the
total coastline

Currently the Trust's land holding is approximately 250,000 hectares

80% of the population live within 20 miles of a Trust property
•
The National Trust cares for 164 historic houses, 19 castles, 47
industrial monuments and mills, 49 churches and chapels, 9 prehistoric
and Roman properties, 13 farm buildings, and 114 other historic
buildings

With 3.1 million members it is the second largest membership organisation
in the UK. This is:

- three times the combined membership of all political parties in

Smith is the most common surname for Trust members, with a total
of 39,296, more than the population of Margate

Trust staff care for a diverse range of structures and contents
including 26 sets of samurai armour and the National Collection
of lawnmowers.
