Nigel Collinson

New Year New Nigel

Meet Nigel Collinson from York. He's bravely volunteered to lose weight under the gaze of NY. He's been spurred into action partly because of vanity, but mostly because there is an alarming history of strokes and heart attacks in his family.

New Year New You

Find out how our two volunteers are getting on. Tune into Breakfast with Allan & Anna every morning between 7am and 10pm.

Listen to Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio York: 103.7 FM, 95.5 FM and 104.3 FM plus 666 & 1260 MW and online.

Nigel spoke to Allan Watkiss on Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio York Breakfast, and Allan began by asking him what his New Year's resolution is.

“Well my New Years resolution is an old chestnut, lots of people want to do it. I need to lose weight, I desperately need to lose weight.â€

Nigel has already changed his eating habits slightly “I don’t eat too badly I just eat an awful lot and possibly at the wrong times of day, especially late at night which is wrong I know.â€

He’s trying to stop eating late at night, but he explained to Allan why he does. “I work for myself, I’m a gardener and I was coming in from work late at night so I tend to eat late at night.

"You have a cup of tea at 9 o’clock and another at 11 o’clock and unfortunately the biscuits come out and you’ve had all the chocolates and sweets over Christmas and it’s the usual story I’m afraid.â€

Allan asked Nigel why he wanted to lose weight and get fitter. “Well it was a combination of things really, I feel uncomfortable with my weight at the moment and clothes are a bit of a problem. I weigh sixteen and a half stone, and I’m sure I shouldn’t weigh as much as that.

"But one of the main reasons is that sadly both my parents died in the last year, my father had a heart attack and my mother had a series of strokes and it’s focused my mind on the fact that I need to lose some weight.â€

Nigel Collinson
Here's the 'before' pic.

Has he a target in mind? “I’m never going to be thin, I accept that, but I’d like to get down to around 14 stone.â€

Nigel is quite active as he’s a gardener, so Allan asked him why he’s putting on weight. “I had 31 years at BT in an office job and over the years the weight gradually creeps up on you and now I get more exercise, but it seems to prompt my appetite, just being out in the fresh air all the time makes me want to eat more. I don’t smoke so that’s not a problem and I don’t drink a lot either, it’s the food.â€

And what about your attempts to lose weight being so public, will that help? “I think so, I think I might get a little bit of stick from one or two people about it, but I’m 99% certain that it will encourage me to keep going.â€

All the best Nigel with weight loss you have a healthy attitude to your weight loss and lifestyle and i dont understand why people should give you stick about it as you put it. I have a tip instead of drinking Tea or boring Water why not drink hot water a lot of this in the morning and put slice lemons in this hot water it is suppose to be very good for you a hot lemon drink first thing in the morning and is healthier than tea and less boring and stricter than just drinking tea or hot water. I drink hot chocolate made with water 40 calories in packets bought from supermarket and going out walking somewhere nice and scenic helps with exercise and relaxation if dislike Boring, tedious, strenuous physical exercise.

I wanted to wish you luck with your weight loss goals. Maybe instead of thinking of being on a diet, making a lifestyle change. My brother is losing alot of weight by just cutting down on his carb intake. I myself try to eat low glycemic foods and that works for me. That, and exercise. Much luck to you!

Hi Nigel I heard you on the radio on Thurs 01/02 and I think you are doing really well. I want to wish you the very best of luck and keep up the good work! P.S. one tip I have learnt - butter you toast when it is cold. I think when it is hot you tend to add more as it melts quickly!!!! feel to add more

Caroline Crump
Good luck with the dieting. I have got another garden for you to dig up in Sheffield! - if this will help. I'm sorry to hear about your Mum & Dad. Caroline

Instead of Tea and Biscuits try a pint of Water
