Art Galore!

By Alex Jackson
A feast of strange and unworldly art has stood before me this week as I ventured to not one, but two galleries. I’ve learned how scary post-traumatic art is and further learnt to appreciate a portrait of Margaret Thatcher, allegedly.

Entering an art gallery under the disguise of a budding art connoisseur I anticipate conflict, not just because I’m armed with a camera (that’s not allowed), but over the actual choice of portraits themselves.

Icons and idols then, were they really worthy of a portrait in a gallery? Well in my personal opinion people like the Queen Mother, Prince Charles and Steven Hawking are givens. However others seemed to pass me by, arguing why they were chosen. That’s the beauty of the whole thing, its art but with an edge (an argument behind it), how many times have you heard that then.

Gallery Watch

traumatic art

It was my first visit to York Art Gallery and quite a smart large place at that. It was just a shame I was nearly arrested for taking a camera in. Well, when I say arrested, I mean given the constant evils and had my every move watched.

My other venture was at the King’s Manor, an old building that is impossible to get lost in, or so they say, as I stumble round court yard after court yard in search of the elusive exhibition.

It happened to just be round the walls of a random room and was quite terrifying art. I mean bodies and freakish situations with bold meanings make for different art to say the least.

In Other News

"It's art with an edge."

As you can tell my art gallery experiences aren’t the most interesting of tales to gab on about. However the guy’s post-traumatic images that were on show have something quite deep and unusual, as they were done after a major beating.

On the light-hearted side of things, the Arctic Monkeys were hilarious at the Mercury Music Prize and the guy I interviewed Richard Hawley, seems to be another winner with his album sales increasing threefold. Also what Gnarls Barkley did to Paris Hilton’s record and album cover was side-splitting, but probably can’t be explained for legal reasons.

Funny Accents

The end is nigh anyway, not for the world, but for my blast placement. And I’ll be travelling to the world of the greatest accent ever on Friday for a Blast finale presentation ceremony (something like that). In Birmingham I’ll see the whole gang from that fateful Bristol weekend of training, which should be good to catch up.

That’s it for me from my penultimate week, no music tips this week and I tried to find some wacky but true facts instead, but they were all cringe-worthy.

Adios y Hasta Luego.
