A Hidden Gem

By Alex Jackson
Tucked away in the beautiful quaint common rooms of King’s Manor, lays one of York’s best kept secrets. A collection of dark abstract oil images by York-born artist, Paul Wilks, that hold a striking message and chart the life of a troubled man.

Details of Vanishing Point Exhibiton

Dates: Vanishing Point Exhibition runs from August 29 to September 22

Open: Open weekdays between 10 am and 3.45 pm.

Admission: Free

Venue: King's Manor, Exhibition Square, York.

There is something quite sinister about post-traumatic images. They are magnificently compelling and shocking pieces of art that hold a very serious message. Paul Wilks’s works are fractured and disjointed shapes filled with many different colours that all reflect what’s going on in his confused mind.

These pieces are even more astounding when you think the images were spawned from a savage attack many years ago. Paul was beaten after confronting burglars in his London home in 2001.

The Expert Witness

However since then, life has been hard mentally and now he has recovered to paint his mind and portray something of the damaged perceptive mechanisms, which one normally looks beyond.

Bewildering Imagery

For this man, these paintings are something to hold dear and for others, simply something to admire. The vast collection, 26 images in total, includes pieces such as the ‘Second attempt’ which show fractured visions of the objective and ‘The Expert Witness’ which shows his inability to draw a photo-fit for the police.

Picture perfect!

The differences in each piece are not only the messages they hold, but the bewildering imagery and use of oil, acrylics, pencil and charcoal on paper, canvas and linen.

ÌýHis most remarkable is ‘A place of safety’ which is a painting with a pizza in the middle. This symbolises how scared and isolated he felt after the attack, not brave enough to order a pizza and the fear of opening the front door.

Chilling

Graphic dreams

These are spine-tingling pieces of art that can lift the hair on the back of your neck with sheer fright and terror. Not for the faint-hearted, but moving all the while. Unique, cold and an all round satisfying exhibition, that has a story to tell, like no other.

Lois Hague
It is great to see Paul's work getting this kind of recognition. I have witnessed what he has been through in recovering from his dreadful experience, and also the rigorousness with which he has dedicated his talent over many years. I have always been amazed by the quality and vitality of his drawing and am deighted to see his work receive appreciation.
