Brendan McMahon

My name is Brendan McMahon and I am a retired Engineering Lecturer, I took early retirement four years ago to do the things I have not had time for previously, including writing.

I have been writing for a few years and I have had a few stories published in Irelands Own, Ulla’s Nib and Castlreagh Anthology.

The Swimmer by Brendan McMahon

He poises alert on the starting deck
the Speedo trunks and goggles adorn,
the body tense as a starter calls
his energy propels as the gun is gone.

He breaks the water streamlined and stretchedÌýÌýÌýÌý
a fuzzy figure below the blue/ green haze,
the ropes with floats take prominence for a sec
before the dynamic powerhouse weighs.

He moves through the water in aquatic form
the body and water in balance defined,
long strokes extending and pulling him onward
to the goal of his glory the objective assigned.

The goggled face it appeared intermittent
as on each stroke with body harmonics,ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý
the long strong legs dynamically charged
erupt energetically and explode hydrostatics.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý

The twisted mouth it strained for breath
when from the membrane the face did appear,
and just like clockwork it re-immersed
and fueled the continuing thrust to sear.

We watched in awe as each end he encroachedÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý
the dynamic figure about to collide,
but just in time a somersault effected
an athletic reversal close timed to deride.

Strong legs erupt like a powerboat propÌýÌýÌý
and the aquatic body accelerates in aisle,
as elbow rises from the liquid mantle
an arm flows forward in fluidic style.

The action perpetual like a clockwork toy
each stroke repeated in disciplined mime,
onward he races with dedication
and touches the board with a winning time.
