Election Fight (Nov 2003) by Brian Gogarty

This is an extract from Brian's much longer poem which was a Bard of Armagh Finalist Poem in 2003.

听听How well I remember that day last November
The Bar was stuffed full with Assembly Members.
听听听听Big Ian arrived with the rest of his crew
Mark Durkan asked him 鈥淲hat can I get you?鈥
听听听听听听Ian replied 鈥淢ark you know full well
that drinking hard liquor鈥檚 a sure road to hell.
听听I drink 鈥榩ure orange鈥 and never touch beer
and you know my motto 鈥 we鈥檒l have no coke here!鈥
听Well the whole of his party just started to snigger
Said Mitchel McLaughlin 鈥淚 don鈥檛 like that frigger.
听听Do you think if I gave the bartender some fivers
instead of pure orange, he鈥檇 slip them screwdrivers鈥
听听听鈥淥h, don鈥檛 be so bitter鈥, said Bairbre de Brun
as she passed him a cocktail of Iced Blue Lagoon.
听听Then she lifted her own glass and downed it in one
and smiled 鈥淲ith more drink I could fancy his son鈥.
