Rory O'Neill
Rory O'Neill

My Name is Rory O'Neill. I am from Co.Down and I have been working for the last 16 years as an electrician. I enjoy writing short stories and poems. 'Unfortunate Mischief' was my first story, most of my other short stories are a little longer. I would encourage everyone that has something to say "say it".

Unfortunate Mischief by Rory O'Neill

There were only three people left in the house after the party had ended. The host and two of the people that had attended the party. Everyone had enjoyed the night. Some more than others. The two people left had drunk so much they had passed out. One on the sofa and the other on the floor. Jason, the owner of the house, only had two beds, his own and one in the spare room. So he dragged his two friends from the living room and stripped them to their underwear and put them in the same bed. In their drunken stupor they cuddled up to each other thinking they had pulled. It was not until the next morning, when they awoke with their arms around each other and kissing, that they realized, and at this stage they started to panic as neither of them could remember what had happened the previous night.

Jason decided not to tell either of them and thought he would get a bit of a laugh from the situation. First he told them they had started kissing in front of everyone that was at the party and they had even started to get frisky and someone had told them to go somewhere more private; that not everybody wanted to see what they were getting up to. This made them wonder about their sexuality. Neither of them had ever looked at another man in their lives but this made them think. They begged Jason not to tell anyone but Jason said it was no longer in his hands that all the others had seen them also. David and Adam left and headed home. Jason called everyone that was at the party and told them about the wind up and to keep it going. All their friends, being just as sadistic as Jason, decided that this would be so much fun, and agreed. David and Adam decided that they would be safer not contacting each other or hanging around with each other for a while. Let the dust settle on this and people might forget about it.

A few days later it was David鈥檚 birthday and Jason arranged for everyone to meet in the Corner House, their local pub. They all turned up except for Adam. As soon as David arrived the torture started. Some of the guys asking which one of the boys he fancied the most.David was defensive right from the start, saying nothing had happened. But the boys just said, 鈥淓veryone seen you, why don鈥檛 you just admit it?鈥 So David said 鈥淭he only way this can be explained is that Adam is gay and he took advantage of me when I was too drunk to know what was happening.鈥 No one had heard from Adam since he had left Jason鈥檚 house. Everyone thought he was just too ashamed of himself and that he could not face any of them so they let him be on his own for a while.

One week later Adam's mom contacted Jason to see if he had been in touch with Adam because she had not heard from him in days. Jason told her he had not seen him or heard from him since the party just over a week ago. Adam's Mom started to cry on the phone saying 鈥淚t鈥檚 just not like Adam, he calls me every day but has not called for the last four days鈥 She asked Jason did he think she should call the police. Jason thought about Adam not being in touch with him and agreed with her. He said he would call all their friends and ask them if they had heard from him.

The last one to hear from Adam was David after they had left the party and parted ways. Jason decided he would call to the house that Adam shared with three other students. When he got there the police were already there. As he approached the house he started to realize that there was something wrong. Adam's housemates were sitting on the steps crying with a policewoman trying to console them. Jason鈥檚 heart started to race and every step that he took seemed like a lifetime. The policewoman approached him and asked if she could help him. He said that he was looking for Adam. The policewoman asked how he had known him. Jason explained that they had been friends for years, then told her about Adam's mom calling him. The policewoman asked Jason to take a seat, that she had a bit off bad news for him. Jason knew at this moment that Adam was dead but that was all the police would tell him. They said he would have to wait for the coroner鈥檚 report to find out more detail. She asked Jason to inform anyone he knew and let them know what had happened.

Later in the day Adam's mom called Jason and asked him to come over as she wanted to talk to him. Jason was so upset he needed someone to talk to anyway and agreed to meet her at 9pm that evening. When he got there Adam's mom met him at the door and threw her arms around him bursting into tears. This set Jason off crying. They eventually calmed down and started to talk.

Adams mom said to Jason 鈥淚 just wanted to let you know first as you were Adams best friend, Adam committed suicide.鈥 Jason could not believe it. He asked why. Adam was fine. He had spoken to him just over a week ago. He had been in great form. Adam knew if he ever had a problem he could have come and talked to Jason about it. Adams mom said he left a note. "I think you should read it鈥, and she handed him the letter. On the back of it, it just said the word "Mom". Jason unfolded the sheet of paper and began to read:

Dear Mom

First of all I just wanted to let you know that I love you with all my heart. My whole family have been a tower of strength for me throughout my life and I have so much respect for all of you. Without your support I would never have made it through school never mind make it to university, but I have recently found out something about myself that I just can鈥檛 deal with and I don鈥檛 want to lay this burden on you. I now realize that I鈥檓 gay. This is the one thing I know you would be fit to handle and learn to live with but I can鈥檛 and I鈥檓 so sorry that I have ended up like this and I鈥檓 sorry that I have caused you so much pain by leaving you in this way but my time has come and I have to go. My love and thoughts will be with you forever.

All my love, Adam
Please remember I am happy

Jason started crying again while Adam鈥檚 mom comforted him, then she asked Jason if he had known that Adam was gay. Jason said no. He had never shown it. That he would always have been eyeing up the girls like all the other guys. The night of the party never even entered his head.
