At the end of the night on orange-hued streets
leaving behind blue Day-Glo Alcopops
the twisting and the grooving of techno beats
an overweight girl stumbles along shuttered shops
mascara has run down smudged puppy fat cheeks
long since she has thought of rhymes and forget-me knots

With an unsteady lurch to the left and move to the right
" Mary had a little lamb "; her mother called her " Joan"
moving towards the nest amidst the Belfast night
dong goes the Albert clock, half past an hour nearer home.
Soon the dawn will rise and bring the face to the light
night-club rejects half dazed, somewhere still roam

small ripples of whimpers rise in the mouth and sound.
