Bill Longmore: PCC 'recovering from cancer operation'

Bill Longmore says despite being diagnosed with lung cancer, he will not step down

West Mercia's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Bill Longmore has undergone lung cancer surgery, his office has confirmed.

Surgeons performed the operation at University Hospital of North Staffordshire (UHNS) on Monday morning.

The PCC discovered he had the disease following a "routine check" in November.

A spokeswoman said the 75-year-old would remain in hospital for the next few days to await further tests.

His spokeswoman added a "further announcement" would be made regarding Mr Longmore's condition next week.

Deputy Barrie Sheldon, who has taken over duties in the meantime, said in a the commissioner was "very groggy" after his surgery.

The retired businessman, who was elected in 2012, has said he would not stand down unless his health deteriorated.
