Bill Longmore says despite being diagnosed with lung cancer, he will not step down

West Mercia's Police and Crime Commissioner Bill Longmore has confirmed he has lung cancer.

Mr Longmore, who was elected to the post in 2012, said the disease was highlighted after a routine check in November. He was expected to go into hospital in the next few days.

He said he had no current plans to step down, but said he would consider it if his condition deteriorated.

Mr Longmore's deputy Barry Sheldon has agreed to take over in the interim.

"I thrive on challenges," said Mr Longmore, who lives on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

He said he was confident he could make a full recovery and said he hoped to be back at work by March.
