Region Profile
The South Wales East region is made up of eight constituencies.
It elects 12 members, eight directly elected constituency members and four additional members. It includes the city of Newport and its population of more than 140,000 people. Larger towns include Caerphilly and the former mining town of Merthyr Tydfil - which is one of the most deprived towns in the UK. It also includes one of the most affluent parts of Wales - rural Monmouthshire. The constituencies which make up the South Wales East region are: Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Islwyn, Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney, Monmouth, Newport East, Newport West and Torfaen. At the 2011 election, the Conservatives and Plaid Cymru both had 2 South Wales East regional AMs.
