The constituency is about ten miles to the north of Cardiff.
The town of Pontypridd lies to the east of the constituency while to the west the population centres around Llantrisant, where the Royal Mint is situated. Because of its close proximity to Cardiff, many residents commute to the capital for work. The mean gross weekly earnings here are £542 compared to £551 across Wales. Labour has held the seat since the first Assembly election in 1999.
In 2011 Mick Antoniw won 50.8% of the vote. The Liberal Democrats came second with 17.9%. The Conservatives secured 5.7% of the vote and Plaid Cymru came fourth with 13.5%.
