The Aberavon constituency lies to the east of Swansea on the South Wales coast, in the Neath Port Talbot local authority area.
Its biggest town is Port Talbot, home to Tata steelworks.
There are fears for the future of the steelworks following the company's announcement that it is considering selling off its UK operations. In January it said it was cutting 750 jobs and now the future of the remaining 3,500 posts in the town will dominate local political debate. A more modern big employer in the area is Amazon, which has a depot at Jersey Marina, while the 850 acre Margam Country Park is in the heart of the constituency. The 2011 census revealed 28.4% of the adult population had a long-term health condition, the second-highest constituency figure in Wales and well above the UK average of 18.2%.
Labour have won this seat at every election since the Assembly was formed in 1999. In 2011 David Rees had a majority of 9,311 over Plaid Cymru, making it one of Labour's safest seats.
