Governor Brian Sandoval of Nevada has called the attack a "tragic and heinous act of violence".

Police have shared an image of Marilou Danley, who is wanted for questioning.

Ms Danley is described as the female companion of the gunman. Police say they were travelling together before the attack took place.

Las Vegas police have shared a travel update and say some roads have reopened.

Footage taken in the aftermath of the shooting showed severe traffic delays in the city as people tried to leave.

A map shared by an ABC News reporter shows the areas of the Las Vegas strip that are reportedly in "lockdown" following the shooting.

Police have warned people to avoid the strip until they are sure it is safe.

The state of Nevada has some of the most permissive gun laws in the US. It is legal to carry an assault rifle and there is no magazine capacity limit.

There are no purchase permits and are no longer required.

There is no waiting period mandated for firearm purchases and are OK.

Las Vegas Police are searching for two vehicles they say are associated with the shooter.

Both have Nevada state licence plates. Earlier, police said the gunman was local to Las Vegas.

Mike Thompson from London is on holiday in Las Vegas, he described the scene following the attack.

“We were walking back to our hotel, the MGM, after dinner and we saw people running towards us in total panic," he told the �鶹Լ��.

“One man had blood all over him and that’s when I knew something was seriously wrong.

“I could hear automatic gunfire so I grabbed my partner and we ran to the back streets.

“People were running and there was chaos.

“We stayed off the main strip ountil we got to our hotel and safety.

“It was very scary.”

Las Vegas police say they are looking for a female companion of the shooter.

Sheriff Joe Lombardo said police are interested in talking to Marilou Danley, an Asian female, who they have not yet located.

The officer said Ms Danley had been travelling with the gunman - who has not yet been named - before the attack.

More than 20 people are dead and more than 100 people are injured following the shooting, say police. They added that two police officers are injured, with one in a critical condition.

Sheriff Joe Lombardo of the Las Vegas Police department said the shooter was located on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel on the city's strip.

He said officers shot and killed the suspect, who is a local resident.

Sheriff Lombardo added that police believe the shooting was "a lone wolf" style attack.

One person has shared a video, filmed from the Luxor hotel, showing the scene on the Las Vegas strip.

"We're safe,we watched it all unfold but now we're in our hotel room "Luxor" on lockdown", they said.

When the gunshots went off, singer Jason Aldean was onstage at the Route 91 Harvest Festival - according to .

Fox says he was rushed offstage and is safe.

In this Instagram post, this woman says she does not feel safe and wishes she had her gun with her.

A Las Vegas nurse has said his brother was caught up in the attack but he has managed to speak to him. Cody, the nurse, told Reuters: " He's definitely shaken up. He just said it's pure chaos.

"He said the police and law enforcement are doing a good job of trying to keep everybody calm. Everyone's just worried, trying to stay in contact with their families. They're doing a good job, telling them all to stay down, stay safe.

"They're making sure everything's very safe and secure before they're attempting to move anybody. It seems like you could hear some shouting and screaming in the background. People are definitely scared. But it seems like they're doing a hell of a job."

A police officer has told reporters that although he knows people want to help, they should stay away from the Las Vegas Strip and Mandalay Bay until police are sure it is safe.

"We have all the resources... We got this, we're good right now," he said.

Some flights have begun again at Las Vegas McCarran airport, which closed an hour ago when the reports of the shooting came in.

People caught up in the shooting are being advised to head to the Thomas and Mack Center, an arena in the city, to get food, shelter and water.
