Jersey's Court of Appeal has ordered a retrial for Jamie Warn due to "a number of irregularities".

A concerned passer-by smashed the window of a car because there were dogs inside during Jersey's hottest July date on record.

Jersey authorities have been urging people not to leave animals in cars due to the extreme heat, which saw temperatures reach 36C on Tuesday.

Police said they got two calls about a car which had a window smashed in St Brelade. One call was from the owner of the vehicle.

Two other calls were made after a dog was seen in a car in St Peter.

Centeniers went out and the car engine was on and the air con on full. The owner was given words of advice.

Both dogs were unharmed.

An independent survey shows that 70% of Jersey people are in favour of allowing someone to take their own lives if they were expected to die anyway within the next six months.

Some 1,420 islanders answered questions about four different scenarios.

They were asked whether assisted dying should be allowed for someone who had a condition that would eventually cause their death, a condition that would cause death within six months, a condition that would not result in death and the final category was defined as an individual suffering from dementia but had not yet lost their mental capacity.

Across all scenarios, between 86.5% and 92% of people believed that assisted dying would be acceptable to some extent.

Health minister Sam Mezec is reviewing the States' position on the matter.

A 71-year-old woman on Guernsey has had half of her life savings stolen by a fraudster who impersonated one of her friends on Facebook, police say.

Officers said the fraudster, posing as the friend, claimed they had won "the Facebook Lottery" and needed "£15,500 to unlock £250,000 prize money", which the victim agreed to lend.

PC Hannah Kershaw, of Guernsey Police, said: "This case highlights the importance of remaining vigilant online at all times.

"Scammers don’t care who you are and don’t give a single thought to the impact of their actions on those they are defrauding.

"Everyone should take this as an opportunity to speak to their loved ones about how to stay safe online, because anyone could be their next victim.”

A former St Helier residential home could be sold for nearly £3m if parishioners agree.

St Helier House, next to the People's Park, was closed down after the parish realised it had the same cladding as fire-hit Grenfell Tower in London.

Constable of St Helier Simon Crowcroft said it was not feasible to refurbish it and keep it operating.

The parish asked for interested parties to make a bid for the 56-bed building, built in 1963, and Westmount Day Nursery next door.

Mr Crowcroft said the the best bid received so far was for £2.9m.

There will be a parish assembly in August to decide whether to sell it.

Sark experienced a record hot day on Tuesday.

Guernsey Met said it was believed the 31.7C recorded there was second on the island's record list. It had hit 33.3C .

Alderney reached 30.5C and Guernsey Airport officially hit 31.6C.

Guernsey's most senior committee, Policy and Resources (P&R), has thrown its support behind plans to develop Leale's Yard.

Last week, States members passed an amendment calling for a policy letter to be produced by April 2020 to kick-start work at the site.

After a contentious States debate, which sparked a backlash from some politicians, P&R said it supported plans to kick-start work there.

Some deputies reacted angrily to the Channel Islands Co-operative Society, the principal owner of land, to ask for £8m of public money to help regenerate the site. However, P&R said it was listening to those concerns.

The committee said it planned to work closely with the Co-op to support the development of the site and said that, if significant government money was needed, it would be made public and States members would be able to fully debate them.

People in Jersey should be aware about the potential risks associated with hot weather ahead of the high temperatures forecast for this week, emergency services say.

Temperatures are expected to hit 27C on Wednesday and 28C on Thursday.

Chief Ambulance Officer Peter Gavey said it was important that people, "especially those at risk from the effects of exposure to heat", took precautions.

Those at risk include the elderly, babies and young children, as well as those with a chronic conditions such as heart or breathing problems.

They have been urged to stay out of the sun between 11:00 and 15:00, and anyone with concerns should "check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be less able to look after themselves".

The island's fire chief has asked people to take extra care to make sure fires were not accidentally started during the warm weather.

And it is not just humans who could be adversely affected by the conditions.

The JSPCA said pet owners should be keeping animals friends in the shade, walking dogs early in the day or later in the evening, and not travelling with or leaving their dog in cars

They should also provide shade for the likes of rabbits and guinea pigs, etc, because "all animals will be effected with the rise in temperature".
