  12. Who is Sarah Newton?published at 21:08 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2019

    Sarah NewtonImage source, Conservative Party

Conservative MP Sarah Newton has this evening become the 15th member of the government to resign over Brexit.

The MP for Truro and Falmouth has been a work and pensions minister since November 2017, but tonight voted against the government to reject leaving the EU without a deal.

Although she campaigned for Remain in the EU referendum, Ms Newton said in February: "I was elected to deliver Brexit, with an orderly transition to a new, close and special relationship with the EU and I will continue to do everything I can to deliver this.

"To honour my commitment, I will vote against a no-deal Brexit and if necessary a delay in when we leave the EU.”

She has previously supported Theresa May's deal twice.

Independent Group MP Anna Soubry says the government has a "pitiful lack of leadership".

"The prime minister just doesn't listen," she adds.

May is acting "like a robot" and prepared to "batter people into submission" to get her deal through, she adds.

Having a second referendum is "the only way through it," she says.

"The prime minister's stubbornness [is] not good for our country."

Tory MP and ERG deputy chairman Steve Baker calls on the government to go back to Brussels and tell the EU that no matter how many times the meaningful vote is had, Theresa May's deal "will not pass".

"When meaningful vote three comes back I will see to it that we will keep voting it down," he adds, noting that the ERG will not support the "rotten" deal, no matter how many times it is brought back.

Andrea Leadsom says the government are "determined to carry out the result of the referendum".

Labour MP Wes Streeting says the government is "stretching the boundaries of credibility" in saying they are listening.

The government has been told twice in historical numbers that their deal does not command the support of the House, he adds.

Mr Streeting says the Leader of the House Andrea Leadsom is trying to run down the clock and have a "Meaningful Vote 3".

He says this is "reckless and irresponsible", and calls for the meaningful vote to be brought back tomorrow "to be voted down as soon as possible".

"It is not within the government's gift to insist on an extension to Article 50," Andrea Leadsom says.

"That will be the result of an agreement with the EU."

She says an agreement "would come back to the House finally and would need to be approved by Parliament".

  20. Those in Europe watching this evening 'very closely'published at 20:47 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2019

    鶹Լ News Channel

The 鶹Լ's Europe editor Katya Adler says that those in Europe have been watching this evening "very closely".

The Commission has said there are two ways to leave the European Union, either with or without a deal, she says.

"The longer an extension would go on" then the more Brexit "overshadows day to day business," she adds.

"It is not in the EU's interest to have a no-deal Brexit" as it will cost them "money" and "political capital". So even though a "long extension" is not "ideal" for the EU, it's likely to still agree to it.
