European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker spoke to Theresa May on Sunday about the Chequers plan, a spokesman in Brussels said.

He told reporters the EU would "continue to negotiate in good faith" with the prime minister after Mr Davis resigned.

David Davis reiterated that he thinks Theresa May "is a good prime minister" In an interview with the Â鶹ԼÅÄ's political editor Laura Kuenssberg.

"I supported her even during tough times during the general election," he says.

On the PM's Brexit plan, over which he quit, he says: "If I don’t believe in it, I won’t do as good a job as someone who does."

David Davis was "substantially sidelined" in the Brexit process, according to the Â鶹ԼÅÄ's deputy political editor.

John Pienaar said the real "big fish" in Brussels is Olly Robbins - who used to be based at Dexeu but was moved into Downing Street as the PM's European aid.

One person said the pair were like "giant icebergs rubbing along" and that Mr Robbins was a "huge stone in the shoe of David Davis and the Brexit department."

Labour MP Chuka Umunna says he hopes his party will not back Theresa May's Chequers Brexit plan, saying whilst it has been described as a soft Brexit by some, it is "nothing of the sort".

Instead, he again called for a "people's vote" on any Brexit deal.

He added: "The chaos and shambles we have seen at the heart of government, not just today but over the last couple of years on this issue, shows we are not going to get one view coming out of cabinet, never mind parliament, and only the people can resolve this in my view."

Mr Raab began his career as a business lawyer at City Law firm Linklaters and spent time on secondments in Brussels advising on EU and WTO law.

He later worked at the Foreign Office between 2000 and 2006, before he was elected as an MP in 2010.

Mr Raab, who is married with two children, studied law at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, and a Masters at Cambridge.

So less that 12 hours after David Davis announces his resignation, Theresa May appoints his replacement.

Tory Brexiteer and housing minister Dominic Raab is taking on the brief.

The MP for Esher and Walton is a member of the Commons Committee on Exiting the European Union and has also served as a justice minister.

Dominic Raab has been announced as the new Brexit secretary.

In a statement, Downing Street said: "The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Dominic Raab MP as Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union.

"This follows the departure from Government of the Rt Hon David Davis MP."

Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen believes the prime minister is fighting for her political life.

He told the Victoria Derbyshire programme he fully supported David Davis' decision to resign, followed by Steve Baker.

"I think those ministers have looked at their conscience, they have looked at what we promised the British people, the sort of Brexit we have pledged for the past two years... and the Chequers proposals do not deliver that Brexit."

He predicted a "huge backlash" for the party and against the credibility of the prime minister, but said the worst outcome was "undermining our democracy".

First, there was talk she had left her job at the Department for Exiting the European Union, then she was staying put, now, she may be getting a promotion...

The pound rose following the resignation of David Davis.

It was up 0.5% against the dollar at 1.33, and 0.3% higher versus the euro at 1.13.

Connor Campbell, financial analyst at SpreadEx, said: "On the one hand it is odd the pound is in a decent mood, given that the 'soft' Brexit plan agreed at Chequers is arguably in doubt following Davis's disappearing act.

"Yet his resignation does potentially make it easier to implement said 'soft' Brexit, dependent on how the next couple of hours and days pan out for PM May."
