Metrodome v Daywalkers: round 2

Having given Daywalkers drummer Dom the chance to grill kid DJ upstart Metrodome, it was time to flip the script, and below, the vinyl jockey Metrodome finds out what makes the man with the sticks tick!

Metrodome: "How did you all meet?"

Dom: "I think the whole situation came about from Robin (bass) and Tonn working together on drum and bass nights, where Robin would promote and often hire Tonn to MC. I think Robin saw the potential in Tonn as a frontman for a band, rather than a DJ sidekick.

"Tonn has his own ‘Hat Room’ at home. The rumour is that all his hats are generated from one special magic hat which lives in this room."

"Robin knew Phil (guitars) from way back at high school so the connection was already there. At the time all this was happening, I was working at a night called Spellbound as a drummer for the live room. The promoters used to come and check me out and I guess they were impressed.

"The first time Daywalkers had a jam to see if it would work out was the first time we were all together in the same room and things went really well. We're like some kind of twisted family now."

M: "Who did you go mad for musically when you were a kid?"

D: "I was always regarded as the weird kid at school because I liked music all across the board as long as it wasn't vacuous pop. I was really into Sepultura but at the same time, I loved the Cure."

M: "How has being from North Manchester determined you sound?"

D: "Essentially, for me, it's not fashion. We're not part of any scene up here and we don't give a ****, but in the North, that doesn't matter so much, you can be your own thing because it's not all just surface here.

"I think feeling free to do what we want has meant all of our influences past and present can feed into our sound. We can be just as gritty and heavy as we are funky and it won't be at odds."

M: "For the uninitiated, in less than ten words, how would you describe your sound?"

D: "One scary-ass slab of funky noise."

M: "Tell me a funny story about doing live gigs..."

D: "One I can recall is when we played at the MEN arena. We were shown to the artists room backstage and it was full of all sorts of free goodies like beer, food, cigarettes, you name it. We were jumping around excited thinking ‘wow, rock and roll starts here, we've made it!’

"Then this big bruiser walks through the door and goes ‘what the **** are you guys doing here, this is Goldie Lookin' Chain’s room!’ Our room was less than impressive but we didn't leave GLC's before stealing cigs and beer and trashing most of the room before they all got there."

M: "What have been your worst and best gig?"

D: "I think one of the best gigs was supporting Skindred. Not necessarily for the playing but the reaction was amazing. It was the first time we played to a real full-on rock crowd so nerves where on overdrive, but they loved us from start to finish.

"The worst was playing at a skate park opening. The venue was like a school cafeteria with a very poor PA, but we don't shy away from these things and despite the conditions, we still converted a small, albeit important, number of fans. Now that's professionalism, kids!"

M: "Tell me something about Daywalkers you can't find out from your MySpace site..."

D: "Tonn has his own ‘Hat Room’ at home. The rumour is that all his hats are generated from one special magic hat which lives in this room. But no-one is allowed in the room. Ever!"

M: "What have you got coming out?"

D: "We've just finished mixing our first single with heavyweight producer Steve Lyon and that's going to be coming out soon as a limited release on Tape Recordings. Watch the Myspace for more details on that."

M: "I really like milk and my dad really likes cheese. What dairy-related produce do you go crazy for?"

D: "Yogurt is one of the best culinary delights ever - and so versatile!"
