Metrodome v Daywalkers: round 1

If there were two hits at Dpercussion this year, it was the mighty Daywalkers and urban kid upstarts Metrodome and Jordan. So we thought we’d get them together for a chat. Here, Daywalkers drummer Dom delves into Metrodome’s mad world.

Dom: "How did you get into DJing and producing?"

Metrodome: "The DJing started when I got a set of CD decks when I was four. A year later, I got some Technics 1200s and abandoned the CD decks forever - except for playing my own stuff out.

"I started producing at around that same time too, starting off on some really rubbish software, like Music for Playstation, and some snide sequencing stuff, like FL Studio.Ìý My first tune took me 45 minutes and was called Ruud's In Da House, by Mr Ruud DJ, which is what I used to call myself."

D: "Rumour has it you’re still 12 years old. How long have you been this age?"

"They wanted their photo taken with us so we obliged and one of them squeezed my right buttock. Crazy!"

M: "217 days."

D: "Who are your inspirations and influences?"

M: "Frank Zappa, Aphex Twin, Q Bert,Ìý and Zapp and Roger."

D: "You seem to have done a lot of club shows. How do you bypass the doormen?"

M: "Well, obviously it’s all arranged, I have to do earlier slots, warm up ones, which suits me as I need my bed! I stay backstage too."

D: "What would be your dream gig and why?"

M: "My dream gig would be somewhere in Tokyo, mainly because of Kikko Man - you know the soya sauce man? His catch phrases are ‘It’s good for you!’ and ‘Show me! Show me!’ He makes me giggle!"

D: "What’s on your iPod?"

M: "I don't have an iPod, but if anyone wants to give me one, that’s cool! Today, I've been listening to Frank Zappa, Funkadelic, Quincy Jones and The Blendaholics."

D: "What were your Dpercussion highlights?"

M: "There were these girls hovering near the stage when me and Jordan were on. I think they were sisters. They wanted their photo taken with us so we obliged and one of them squeezed my right buttock. Crazy!"

D: "What do you think about the current Manchester music scene?"

M: "I like me, The Blendaholics and The Daywalkers."

D: You sound like you should be signed to Mute Records. Have you ever heard Warm Leatherette by The Normal?

M: "No, I haven't but have you heard Disinformation and Fantasmmagorical by an up and coming producer called Metrodome?"

D: "On your MySpace, you said ‘listing all my influences would take pages and pages’. If you had to name your all time favourite artist, who would it be?"

M: "Yep, you've guessed it… Frank Zappa!"

D: "Where do you see yourselves in ten years time?"

M: "Eating Jaffa Cakes!"

D: "Do you fancy remixing a Daywalkers track sometime?"

M: "Yes, I would like to remix Mayhem sometime. Just now though, I'm concentrating on my EP, which will be coming out on The Kr8z Recordings."
