Setting the pace for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Children in Need was mid-morning presenter Jon Cuthill who aimed to break the record for stacking sugar cubes (dressed as Superman!)

The task was trickier than it sounds.Μύ Jon had to build a tower of sugar lumps within three hours, no wider than 10cm and without any glue or wire supports.ΜύHe needed to reach a height of more than 145.5 cm (57.2 inches) to secure a place in the record books.

The previous record for the tallest sugar cube tower is held by Mat Hand.Μύ His tower was exhibited at the Podewil Centre for Contemporary Arts, Berlin, Germany on 19 June 2003.

However Mat wasn't presenting a live radio programme at the time so there was even more pressure on Jon as the tower began to grow throughout the morning in West Quay shopping centre in Southampton.

Sweet success - the record is broken!

To ensure the tower would be structurally sound, local Engineering consultants Gifford put together a plan which was closely followed.

With the crowds growing throughout the morning, with only a few minutes left, and following a couple of heart-stopping mini-falls, the Guinness World Record officials confirmed the record had been equalled.Μύ

As everyone held their breath, Jon slowly placed the next cube on top of the precarious-looking tower to secure a place in history.
