How to use the Playbook
We've chosen a handful of methods that can be done in less than a day. Play around and try out different approaches. The clue is in the name.
We've arranged them into groups which are themes in the design process.
You can use the methods at any point in your project. Dip in, read a couple of methods, read them all, do some remotely, or maybe try them when you get together with the team… whatever suits your style and situation.
And remember, there are many more methods out there, so don't feel limited to those included here.
Tips for running great workshops
Most of the methods are workshop based. Running great workshops will help you to get the most out of them. Here are a few tips on how to do that:
- Cross-discipline – The methods in this book are best run with diverse, cross discipline, teams.
- Accommodate all – Some people draw well, some write well, some are loud & some are quiet. Tailor sessions to your group.
- Create the right atmosphere – Make it as easy as possible to get the most out of people. If you're going to be in the same physical space - book a space, a clear block of time, and have plenty of pens & post-it notes. If you're running it remotely make sure you book in breaks, check everyone has access to software, and do a dry run if you're using features like breakout rooms.
- Use a dedicated facilitator – Have one person facilitate so the rest can focus on being effectively creative.
- Seek experience first – Facilitating can be tricky & works best with experience and preparation. Get in touch with people who know the methods and have run them.
