Wood mouse

Mice
Plants affected: Theft of large seeds, especially peas and beans, and newly planted bulbs.

Symptoms: No plants! Dug up or rotting bulbs and seeds.

Prevention/Control: To prevent damage try putting down a thick layer of holly leaves on top of newly planted rows of seed and bulbs. If mice are around, put down traps. Humane ones that don’t kill the mice are available.
Red ants

Ants
Plants affected: The lawn, patio and containers.

Symptoms: Conical mounds of what looks like finely sifted soil that’s been excavated from between plant roots, leaving them exposed and unable to suck in water.

Prevention/Control: If ants nest where there are no plants to harm, ignore them. Otherwise, in early summer, flood their nests with water to encourage them to move elsewhere. Protect pots by smearing crop petroleum jelly around the sides.
