Follow the old gardening adage, β€œspend as much on the hole as the plant" and you’ll not go wrong. Plants are cosseted in their pots at the nursery and expect the same treatment when you plant them in the garden. Do it properly, shower them with tender loving care and they will thrive. If you shove them into too small a hole and ignore them, don’t be surprised when they sulk and die.
