A Guy Thing DVD (2003)

Despite the handful of positive things we said about A Guy Thing when it was released this summer, we couldn't help but feel it was a wasted opportunity. With director Chris Koch's comments on the various alternate endings on the DVD, you get the feeling that here's a man who is not directing with his entire conviction. But thanks to Selma Blair and Julia Stiles, there's a fun mood to this disc that's hard to resist.

No More Dudes!

Koch wins points for removing over 50 "Dudes" from the script, as revealed in the featurette Inside A Guy Thing. He loses them for dithering so much over the end of the movie, which was heavily influenced by a test audience - clearly on crack, given the far sweeter ending they helped ditch. You can check out the two alternate ends with a Koch commentary and see what you think.

Charmingly Useless

There's a wholly useless featurette on what the cast reckon a bachelor party should be like, and another weak one that examines the gravy scene. What makes them watchable is the humour of the cast, especially Selma and Julia, who clearly had some in-jokes running throughout the shoot.

Now For The Fun

A lot of DVDs come with blooper reels these days, and frankly most are just not funny. The Guy Thing disc is a pleasing exception, though, and a good note to end this DVD on.
