Luc Besson and Steven Chasman

The Transporter

Interviewed by Alec Cawthorne

Writer/director/producer Luc Besson made his international breakthrough with "Subway" in 1985. Since then Besson has added a string of films to his name, including "The Big Blue", "Nikita", "LΓ©on", and "The Fifth Element". He talks here, with producer Steven Chasman, about co-writing "The Transporter".

Why did you write a movie for Jason Statham to star in?

Luc Besson: I know Steve [Chasman]. He came to me and we spoke about Jason and how good he is physically, because of his background in martial arts and boxing. We had lunch together in Paris and after that I came up with an idea for a story and we put it all together.

Luc was too busy to direct the film. So how did Corey Yuen become involved?

Steven Chasman: I have a great relationship with Corey Yuen. Corey is very like Luc - they both make films from the heart, and it shows. It was easy to bring him onto the project since he already knew Jason and Luc.

LB: This is Corey's first English-language movie. He's directed around 35-40 Chinese-language films, action-directed over 75, and acted in over 60. He brought with him a wealth of talent.

It's Jason Statham's first leading role. Were you sure he could carry it off?

LB: I think Jason has a big heart. He works hard on his films. He deserves this leading role.

Does he have star quality?

LB: Oh yes, and he's going to go far, for sure.

SC: I think this is his first film as an actor. He is terrific. We really see who he is.
