Marlon Wayans

"Scary Movie 2"

Interviewed by Jason Korsner

When was there first talk of a sequel?

Miramax came up to us at the premiere of the first movie waving a big cheque.

Was the second film harder to write?

I think parodies and thrillers are the hardest to write. Generally, comedies are tough because you have to try to get three to four jokes per page, in the hope that at least one works.

How do you decide which films to parody?

You have to choose the absolute classics, the most successful of their genre. That's why this time we went for "The Haunting" and "What Lies Beneath" in a big way.

You travel very close to the bone at times.

We don't sit there and think "let's be as disgusting as we can.". We just do what makes us laugh. But they're really clamping down in the US at the moment so we had to cut a lot out to get a lower rating. You'll be able to see it all on the DVD though.

Are you upset that the film has been given an 18 certificate here? A lot of your target audience won't be able to see it?

Oh yes they will. They'll buy tickets for "Cats and Dogs" and then sneak in.

With so many films to parody each year, will there be yet another sequel?

We don't want to become the "Scary Movie Guys" so right now we're working on a couple of buddy comedies. It won't always be Scary Movie, but we'll stay in the realm of comedy.

"Scary Movie 2" is in UK cinemas on 7th September 2001.
