Heartbreakers (2001)
15

Despite the calibre of the "Heartbreakers" players, there is one glaring omission from the cast list - Jennifer Love Hewitt's breasts. Hitched up around her ears, they play a key role in most of her scenes and act more convincingly than she does.

Hewitt plays Page, a bad girl who scams her way through life with her mother Max (Sigourney Weaver). Their current con involves Max seducing and marrying wealthy men before catching them inflagrante with an undercover Page - so netting a hefty separation settlement. Stumped with a crippling tax bill, the pair decide to go after ancient tobacco billionaire William B Tensy (Gene Hackman), a chain-smoking coffin-dodger who's due to drop at any minute. And while Max works on Tensy, Page struggles with her affection for a sweet bar owner (Jason Lee) who also happens to be sitting on a real-estate fortune...

A sort of low-rent "Grifters" meets "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" via "Weekend At Bernie's", by rights "Heartbreakers" should be consigned to the Β£1 weekend rental shelf but manages to pull an engaging and funny popcorn movie out of a mediocre script, slack pace, and lacklustre direction thanks to the considerable talents of its cast. Weaver and Hackman display deliciously astute comic timing despite more serious profiles, while Ray Liotta puts a welcome goofy spin on his "Goodfellas" shtick.

Hewitt though, lacks the necessary duplicity for her character and is too patently agreeable to bitch convincingly, ultimately reducing her to eye-candy among the professionals. Still, she has the right cleavage for the role, and there's sure to be legions of men thankful for that alone.
