Jurassic Park III

Interviewed by James Mottram

Did you enjoy working on "Jurassic Park III"?

I had a great time. Joe Johnston was a wonderful director. It's productive to make those big, big Hollywood movies. It's my biggest budget yet, and the most amount of work. It's wonderful. You have a huge trailer. Something screws up, no big deal. You just do it again. There's no gun to the head. You can do it the way it should be. "Jurassic Park" in particular is astounding because it's so technical. I watched the best and the brightest in Hollywood, which is saying something, do better work than they've ever done before. Whether you like a dinosaur movie or not, the work they did was unparalleled.

What did you make of Stan Winston's animatronic dinosaur puppets?

They were mind-boggling. I'm telling you, they were mind-boggling! It's hard to believe they were not alive. It's all very scary. I hope it won't be too scary for the kids.

Was the film physically demanding for you?

At times. There's a small airplane accident where we hit a Spinosaurus' tail, and he's pissed off, and he chases us for the next hour-and-a-half, so we're just running from one thing to another. So we got beat up a bit. I have a gag up on a crane, where the dinosaur is shaking the crane and shakes me off. That got hairy. I got knocked off the crane a couple of times. Other than that, it was just a lot of running around.
