    Concert information

How did Beethoven give the final movement of his famous Fifth Symphony the impact he required? With trombones of course! Although this wasn’t actually the first use of the trombone in a symphony, it’s probably the most famous, and it’s a fitting climax to this first Trombone Weekend concert from the Â鶹ԼÅÄ SSO. Swedish composer Jan Sandström’s concerto for two trombones, meanwhile, is a homage to the Spanish city of Cáceres (at its UK Premiere The Guardian compared the work’s ‘squawking and honking’ to the colony of storks that nest in Cáceres's medieval towers), while Rossini’s frantic, tune-packed overture is another early showcase for the trombone. The Â鶹ԼÅÄ SSO’s Simon Johnson plays the Sandström with Christian Lindberg, who shares conducting duties with Martyn Brabbins.

Pre-Concert Event: 6.45pm in the Recital Room: a short informal performance by students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland to showcase some of the fine young brass talent available here in Glasgow (free to ticket-holders, limited seating availability).

This concert will be recorded for future broadcast on Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio 3.
