A powerful expression of both loss and hope, Britten’s War Requiem was a defining work not just for him but for twentieth century music, a true landmark in the choral repertoire.

Britten: War Requiem

** Please note Susan Bullock is unwell and has sadly had to withdraw from the concert. We are delighted to welcome Emma Bell as our soprano for Sunday.

It was a dream commission for the pacifist composer: write a piece to mark the dedication of Coventry cathedral, which had been devastated by bombs one generation earlier. Britten seized the chance both to commemorate and innovate, bringing together an ancient mass setting with the hard-hitting poetry of Wilfred Owen. Emotionally direct and uncompromising, the work retains a prophetic tone even today.

Please note: there is no interval
