About This Event
A unique collaboration between RNCM string students and the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Philharmonic Orchestra as part of the 2019 RNCM Strings Festival, a weekend celebrating string music across a range of concerts, workshops, talks and masterclasses: showcasing artistry and learning at the highest levels.
This evening’s concert opens with Tchaikovsky’s romantic overture to Romeo and Juliet, based on Shakespeare's play of the same name.
We also hear the most treasured cello concerto of all: Elgar’s intimate yet immense memorial for a world changed beyond measure by the Great War.
Finally, this evening closes with Sibelius’s only concerto; premiered in 1904, a work that combines intense virtuosity with profound depths of expression. Sibelius began his musical career with high hopes of becoming a concert violinist. When destiny forged another path for him, he expressed his relationship with his instrument through this concerto.
Tickets £18 / students and under-18s £5 – Available at www.rncm.ac.uk/stringsfestival
