About This Event
Pianist Louis Lortie joins conductor Moritz Gnann for today’s live Â鶹ԼÅÄ Radio 3 broadcast.
Saint-Saëns once mused that the opening of his Third Piano Concerto was inspired by the sound of a river. An engaging and fascinating work – whilst not as often performed the most famous second or fifth – it is still an original addition to the repertoire.
We also hear music from Ravel’s beguiling ballet suite Ma Mère l'Oye (Mother Goose). Inspired by the fairy tales of Charles Perrault, Ravel’s piece began life as a piano duet before developing into an orchestral ballet score. Charmingly delicate and luxurious in sound and elegance, it’s full of the warmth of childhood fantasies.
Also today - Dukas’s spellbinding The Sorcerer's Apprentice, first encountered by many through the Walt Disney animated film, Fantasia; Chaminade’s Callirhoe (suite) and Colin Matthew’s orchestration of Ravel’s Oiseaux tristes.
